Postponed!
The Deck Plays have been postponed until the spring; this summer was fuller than expected, as was the early fall, and there simply wasn't time to put it all together. Not having access to office computer and its files for a time in September, as classes were starting, didn't help! My apologies to all concerned! Will post a list of the plays shortly; still digging out from the computer problems. And it's very humbling to realize how depend I am on a machine and its files!

33 Plays in hand!
a hawk in the ravine, as seen from The Deck
Thirty three ten minute deck plays were sent in; in the process of reading them all, and seeing how they can work together. A wide variety of approaches and genres, ranging from broad comedy, to musicals, to philosophic discussions; pieces with strong emotions and sentiments, some ironic; several heavily realistic works, while there are others with surrealistic or fantastic elements. Wonderful range, both of work and of playwrights -- some highly experienced writers with many productions, some new comers just beginning. Having a blast going through all these -- thanks to all who sent in! More details as I can get to them all!

Announcing the Deck Plays
Announcing:
Ten minute plays set on, near, or about the deck at 198 Walhalla Rd., Columbus, Ohio
Guidelines:
All plays must utilize the setting in some way -- and should indicate where the audience should be located in relation to the performance space.
Plays must include the phrase, “Walhalla ravine” and refer in some way to the flatness of the geography of Central Ohio that is relieved only by the series of glacial ravines, of which the Walhalla Ravine is one.
Plays may be submitted via email (in Word, pdf, or rtf format only, please) or in hard copy. If submitting hard copy, please send two copies of the play to
Walhalla Deck Plays Project
198 Walhalla Rd.
Columbus, OH 43202-1442
Deadline for submission: July 15, 2010 (postmark). Please include a brief autobiographical statement, which can be used for promotional/publicity purposes.
As background: the ravine was developed in the late 19th century by the owners of the Armbruster Scenic Studios, whose working space was at one end of the ravine. As providers of theatrical scenery (along with decorations for fraternal groups, school proms, weddings, and all manner of things), the Armbrusters, originally from Germany, were great fans of Richard Wagner and his work. Hence the appearance of Walhalla Road, Brynhild Ave., Mimring St., and other references to the Ring Cycle. Images of surviving Armbruster drops from a touring Uncle Tom's Cabin troupe can be found at http://utc.iath.virginia.edu/onstage/imagesosu/dropshp.html
To submit via email, send to:
Walhalladeckplays@gmail.com
Hard copies of scripts will not be returned unless sufficient postage is included with the submission.
There is no fee for submission.
By submitting scripts, the author agrees to permit two performances of the play by the Department of Theatre, The Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio, during the fall of 2010, without any royalty payments, and to permit the duplication of the script in only enough copies for performers.
All performance and publication rights remain the property of the copyright holder, not controlled by the Walhalla Deck Plays project, or the Department of Theatre.
